National media story on Drax environmentally destructive change to wood pellets

The Mail Online today, 16th March, has a story about gigantic Drax power station’s change of power source to burning wood pellets. The focus of the story is the nature and dual environmental impact of what Drax is doing.

It is importing wood pellets from North Carolina, which is pulping its forests as hard as it can go.These are not just pine forests but deciduous hardwood forests. They say this is sustainable but of course it isn’t. Mature hardwood forests take time to regrow – time the voracious Drax does not have.

Drax takes two thirds of North Carolina’s annual output.

The associated madness in this  – and Drax’s motivation – is that burning woodfuel is deemed by the EU to be ‘carbon neutral’. Of course it isn’t. Why can wood be carbon dated?

So we are seducing, by mega purchase and export, the destruction of North Carolina’s forests  – which are an important carbon sink; and their import here to do what experts say actually increases the Drax carbon emissions as compared with the ‘dirty’ coal burning.

And the expensive imported wood pellet excursion puts a hefty whack on the energy bills of the helpless UK consumer.
